An FAQ chatbot takes the questions you've already answered on your FAQ page, in your policies and in your guides, and answers them conversationally for every visitor. Instead of scrolling a list hoping their question is there, people just ask. InstantKnowledgeBot builds an AI FAQ chatbot from your own content in about a minute.

Why isn't an FAQ page enough?

FAQ pages are useful, but they have limits:

  • Wording mismatch. You wrote "What is your returns window?" and the visitor is wondering "Can I send it back after two weeks?"
  • Answers span entries. "Can I return a sale item from abroad?" might need your returns, sale and international shipping answers together.
  • Long pages get skipped, especially on mobile.
  • Language. Most FAQ pages exist in one language.

An AI FAQ chatbot understands the meaning of the question, finds the relevant content, combines it into one answer, and replies in the visitor's language.

How is an AI FAQ chatbot different from an old-style FAQ bot?

Older FAQ bots matched keywords to canned answers, or made visitors click through button menus. They broke as soon as someone phrased a question differently. A modern FAQ chatbot uses a large language model, but grounded in your content: InstantKnowledgeBot instructs the bot to answer only from your knowledge base and to say when something isn't covered. You get the flexibility of AI without the risk of it inventing policies. See what is a knowledge base chatbot for the concepts.

How do you build an FAQ chatbot from your website?

  1. Collect your FAQ content. Note the URLs of your FAQ page and policy pages (shipping, returns, privacy, terms), or copy their text. Add any guides as files.
  2. Create a free account and start a new bot, from a template or blank.
  3. Import, paste or upload the content. Import pages from their URL, or add pasted text and PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, CSV, HTML or JSON files.
  4. Generate. We read everything, suggest a name and greeting, and propose starter questions visitors are likely to ask.
  5. Test in the Test tab with oddly worded questions, and one that isn't covered.
  6. Embed the chat bubble on every page with one line of code.

Import your FAQ page straight from its URL (or the whole site, up to 10 pages per import on Free, 50 on Starter, 200 on Pro and 500 on Agency), or paste and upload the content yourself. Every imported page is listed, so you choose exactly what the bot knows. Step-by-step: create a chatbot from your website FAQ.

How should you write FAQ content for a chatbot?

Your existing FAQ probably works fine. A few tweaks help:

  • One topic per answer, with the key fact in the first sentence.
  • Include specifics: numbers, timeframes, prices, links and contact details.
  • Name things consistently. If it's "Pro plan" in one place, don't call it "Premium" elsewhere.
  • Add the questions people actually ask (your inbox is the best source) rather than the ones you wish they'd ask.

What does the FAQ chatbot do when it doesn't know?

It says so. You set a fallback message in the bot's settings ("When it can't answer, say…"), for example "I don't have that answer. Email hello@yourcompany.com and we'll reply within a day." The question then shows up in your knowledge gaps list, so your FAQ grows from real demand. Over a few weeks, that loop makes both the bot and your FAQ page better.

Will a chatbot hurt my FAQ page's SEO?

No. The chatbot loads in an isolated panel and doesn't change your page content. Keep your FAQ page: search engines index it, and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity read pages like it when answering questions about your business. Clear FAQ content helps with both, as we explain in generative engine optimization.

Where do FAQ chatbots work best?

Anywhere visitors ask the same questions repeatedly: online stores, clinics, restaurants, SaaS products, schools, hotels and local services. Industry templates give you a head start, with starter questions and a pasteable starter FAQ; browse the templates. For support teams, see the customer support chatbot page.

What does an FAQ chatbot answer look like?

Imagine your FAQ has three separate entries: returns are accepted within 30 days, sale items are final sale, and international orders ship from the US. A visitor asks:

Visitor: Can I return a discounted jacket if I live in Canada?

Bot: Unfortunately sale items are final sale, so a discounted jacket can't be returned. Full-price items can be returned within 30 days, including from Canada. International returns ship back to our US warehouse.

No single FAQ entry answers that question, but the bot combines the relevant ones. That's the main advantage over a static page.

How many questions should an FAQ chatbot start with?

There's no minimum. Many small businesses start with their existing FAQ plus their policy pages. What matters more is covering the questions people actually ask. A practical approach:

  1. Start with your existing FAQ and policies.
  2. Run the bot for two weeks.
  3. Check knowledge gaps and top questions in the bot's overview.
  4. Add answers for the gaps, then repeat.

Industry templates include a pasteable starter FAQ with placeholders, which is a fast way to cover the basics.

Which pages should show the FAQ chatbot?

Most businesses add the chat bubble site-wide with one snippet in the footer, so it's available wherever a question comes up. Two extra placements help: embed the chat inline on the FAQ page itself, with the iframe code, so visitors who don't find their question can ask; and add it to high-intent pages such as pricing, checkout help or booking pages.

What does it cost?

Start on the free plan with one bot and 100 hosted AI messages a month, or connect your own AI key for unlimited messages billed by your provider. Paid plans add bots, messages and features; see pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an FAQ page and an FAQ chatbot?

An FAQ page makes visitors find the right question themselves. An FAQ chatbot understands a question asked in any wording or language and replies from the same content, combining answers from several entries when needed.

Can I build an FAQ chatbot from my existing FAQ page?

Yes. Import the FAQ page straight from its URL (or the whole site), or copy its text and paste it in. The bot answers from that content, and you can refresh it from the website when the page changes.

Do I still need an FAQ page?

Yes. Keep it: search engines and AI assistants read it, and some visitors prefer to scan. The chatbot complements the page.

What if a visitor asks something not in the FAQ?

The bot says it doesn't have that information and shows your fallback message, such as your support email. The question appears in knowledge gaps so you can add it.

Is an FAQ chatbot free?

InstantKnowledgeBot's free plan includes 1 bot and 100 hosted AI messages a month, or unlimited messages with your own AI key.
