> To create a chatbot from your website FAQ, import your FAQ and policy pages into InstantKnowledgeBot straight from their URL (or copy their text and paste it in), test the answers, and embed the bot on your site with one line of code. Every imported page is listed, so you choose exactly which pages the bot learns from, and you can refresh them when the FAQ changes.

You can **create a chatbot from your website FAQ** in about five minutes: import your FAQ and policy pages from their URL (or paste or upload their text) into InstantKnowledgeBot, test it, and embed it on your site. The chatbot then answers visitors' questions in their own words, using the answers you've already written.

## Why turn an FAQ page into a chatbot?

Your FAQ page holds answers, but visitors have to find them. A chatbot built from the same content lets people ask naturally ("Can I return something I bought on sale?") and combines answers from several entries into one reply. It also replies in the visitor's language. The FAQ page stays, which is good for search engines and AI assistants; the chatbot makes the same knowledge easier to use. More on why: [FAQ chatbots](/solutions/faq-chatbot).

## Step 1: Which website pages should you collect?

Start with the pages that answer the most questions:

- **FAQ page**: the core.
- **Shipping, returns and refund** policies.
- **Pricing** or plans page.
- **About and contact** pages: hours, locations, phone, email.
- **Services or product** pages with key details.
- **Booking or ordering** instructions.

Skip blog posts and news unless they contain current answers. Old announcements can confuse the bot with outdated details.

## Step 2: How do you get the text off your website?

There are four easy ways:

1. **Import from the URL.** In the bot's Knowledge step, enter the FAQ page's address and choose **Single page** (or **Whole site** to import more pages, up to 10 pages per import on Free, 50 on Starter, 200 on Pro and 500 on Agency). Menus, footers and cookie banners are left out. Pages that only show their text after JavaScript runs can't be read; use one of the options below for those. Full walkthrough: [build a chatbot from your website URL](/guides/build-chatbot-from-website-url).
2. **Copy and paste.** Open the page, select the content (skip menus and footers), copy and paste it into the bot's knowledge box. Quickest for a single FAQ page.
3. **Save as HTML.** In your browser, use **File → Save Page As…** and choose "Webpage, HTML only". Upload the `.html` file. Scripts and styles are stripped and the text is kept.
4. **Print to PDF.** Use your browser's **Print → Save as PDF** and upload the PDF.

If your site runs on WordPress, Shopify or another CMS, you can often copy the text straight from the page editor, or export policy pages from the admin. In Shopify, for example, policies are under **Settings → Policies**.

## Step 3: How do you create the chatbot?

1. [Sign up free](/signup) and confirm your email with the 6-digit code.
2. Click **New bot** and pick a **template** for your industry or start blank. Templates include a starter FAQ with placeholders, which is useful if your own FAQ is thin. Browse them on the [templates page](/templates).
3. **Import the page from its URL**, **paste the text** or **upload the files** (PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, CSV, HTML or JSON, up to 50 MB each and 25 per upload).
4. **Customize:** name the bot (or let us suggest a name from your content) and choose an accent color. We also write a greeting and starter questions from your content; edit them any time in **Settings**.
5. **Choose the AI engine:** hosted Claude, or your own API key.
6. Create the bot.

## Step 4: How do you test the FAQ chatbot?

In the **Test** tab, try:

- **The same question, worded differently** from how your FAQ phrases it.
- **A question that needs two FAQ entries**, such as returns plus international shipping.
- **A question in another language.**
- **A question your FAQ doesn't answer.** The bot should say it doesn't have that information.

Then set the **fallback message** in **Settings** ("When it can't answer, say…"), for example "I don't have that answer yet. Email hello@yourcompany.com and we'll help."

## Step 5: How do you embed it on your site?

Open **Embed & share** and copy the chat bubble snippet:

```html
<script src="https://instantknowledgebot.com/widget.js" data-bot="YOUR_BOT_ID" defer></script>
```

Paste it before `</body>` on your site, or follow the guide for your platform: [WordPress](/guides/add-chatbot-to-wordpress), [Shopify](/guides/add-chatbot-to-shopify), [Wix](/guides/add-chatbot-to-wix), [Squarespace](/guides/add-chatbot-to-squarespace), [Webflow](/guides/add-chatbot-to-webflow) or [plain HTML](/guides/add-chatbot-to-html-website). Consider also embedding the chat inline at the bottom of your FAQ page, so visitors who don't find their question can ask.

## How do you improve the FAQ over time?

This is where a chatbot pays off beyond answering questions. The bot's overview shows:

- **Top questions:** what visitors ask most. Make sure those are near the top of your FAQ page too.
- **Knowledge gaps:** questions the bot couldn't answer. Each is a candidate for a new FAQ entry.
- **Feedback:** thumbs up and down on answers.

Add new answers to your FAQ page **and** the bot's knowledge. Over a few weeks, both get noticeably better.

## What makes FAQ content work well for a chatbot?

- **Lead with the answer.** "Yes, we ship to Canada. Delivery takes 5 to 8 business days."
- **Be specific.** Numbers, timeframes and links beat "it depends".
- **One source of truth.** Delete outdated versions from the knowledge base.
- **Consistent names** for plans, products and services.

## How long does it take to see results?

Setup takes minutes, but the real value builds over the first few weeks. In week one, watch conversations closely and fix any wrong answers at the source. In weeks two to four, add the knowledge gaps you see. After a month, most of the common questions should be answered well, and your FAQ page will be better too.

## What if your website has no FAQ page yet?

Start from your inbox instead. List the 20 questions customers ask most by email, phone or social messages, write a short answer for each, and paste them in as question-and-answer pairs. Industry templates also include a starter FAQ with placeholders to fill in. Publish the same list as an FAQ page on your site afterwards: it helps visitors, search engines and AI assistants.

## What does it cost?

The free plan includes one bot and 100 hosted AI messages a month; connect your own AI key for unlimited messages. Paid plans add more bots and hosted messages, and Pro and Agency add lead capture and team seats; see [pricing](/pricing). Have PDFs instead of web pages? ## Frequently asked questions

**Can InstantKnowledgeBot crawl my website automatically?**

Yes. Enter the URL and import a single page, the whole site or a sitemap (up to 10 pages per import on Free, 50 on Starter, 200 on Pro and 500 on Agency; the 14-day free trial uses the Pro limit). robots.txt is respected, and every imported page is listed in the Knowledge tab so you can remove outdated or irrelevant ones.

**What's the fastest way to get my FAQ into the bot?**

Enter the FAQ page's URL and import it as a single page, or open the page, select all the questions and answers, copy, and paste them into the bot's knowledge. Either takes under a minute.

**Does the bot need the questions as well as the answers?**

Including both is best. Question-and-answer pairs give the bot clear context, and it can still answer questions worded differently.

**How do I keep the bot in sync when I edit my FAQ page?**

If you imported the page from its URL, click Refresh from website in the bot's Knowledge tab; paid plans (and the free trial) can also re-import it automatically every week. If you pasted or uploaded it, update the text or re-upload the saved page. The live bot updates as soon as the new content is in.

**Can I use pages from other websites?**

Only upload content you own or have the right to use. The bot is meant to answer from your business's own information.
